Let’s admit it — we’ve all had our fair share of love-hate moments with Hyderabad’s autowaalas.
Sure, we curse them for their rash driving, abrupt lane changes, constant paan-chewing, occasional rudeness, late-night fare surges, and their outright refusal to go to "door ka area". But sometimes, just sometimes, these same autowaalas turn into unlikely heroes — showing up like local legends when you least expect it.
1st Incident: Auto on the Run(run)way!
A friend of mine from Bihar was running late for the airport — so late that missing the flight felt inevitable. This was back in the 70s, when Hyderabad’s traffic was a breeze, and airport security was minimal.
Enter: our autowaala saviour, who confidently promised, “Sir, aapka flight miss nahi hoga.”
What followed was a high-speed chase worthy of a Fast & Furious: Old City Drift sequel. The auto moved like a Ferrari, at one point nearly doing a wheelie. The real twist? He took a shortcut that led straight to the airport runway. Yes, THE runway.
Picture it: A rickety auto in full speed, racing toward an airplane like it was delivering a VVIP. My friend called me, breathless with laughter. Miraculously, there were no arrests or airport drama — the autowaala dropped him at a discreet spot and zoomed off, asking just ₹5 extra for his "express drop".
Legend, right?
2nd Incident: Lost in Translation
Another classic moment: one of my father’s friends, a very innocent soul, visited from out of town. He and my dad hopped into an auto, and behind the driver’s seat was the classic sign:
This was supposed to mean that after 11 PM, you'd have to pay 1.5x the fare (to cover return costs due to lack of late-night customers). But our guest read it literally and asked my dad, all wide-eyed:
“Wah, Hyderabad ke autowaale kitne dayalu hain! Raat ko aadhe paise wapas karte hain?”
My dad nearly choked on his laughter and couldn’t wait to share the story with us at home. Since then, every time I sit in an auto, I end up telling this tale — and the laughs never get old.
So yes, Hyderabadi autowaalas might test your patience on most days… but they’ll always have a story (and a shortcut) up their sleeve. π
